IROM SHARMILA, EROINA DEI DIRITTI UMANI IN INDIA

India. Irom Sharmila Chanu in sciopero della fame dal 4 novembre 2000. Uno sciopero della fame che dura da 15 anni in protesta contro la legge AFPSA, legge che conferisce poteri speciali all'esercito negli stati del nord est dell'India e in particolare nel Manipur (stato aperto solo recentemente al turismo), annesso all'India nel 1949 ma da allora scosso da movimenti secessionisti. Stato da cui Irom è originaria.
Irom Sharmila Chanu inizia il suo sciopero della fame dopo l'uccisione di 10 giovani da parte dell'organizzazione paramilitare indiana "Assam Rifles", ed è subito arrestata per "tentativo di suicidio". Da allora alterna in media un anno di prigione a un giorno di libertà.
E' nutrita con la forza tramite sonda gastrica ma ha dichiarato che porrà fine al suo sciopero soltanto dopo l'abrogazione di questi poteri speciali.
Malgrado la durata e la forza di questa protesta, la storia di Irom Sharmila Chanu non è molto conosciuta. Merita una più larga diffusione e più forte sostegno.
